Hi Soo, Cheri Torres with DISH's Social Media Team here. In order to transfer programs from one DVR to the other you will need an external hard drive (EHD). The EHD is only compatible with the ViP 211, 211k, 411, 612, 622, 722, 722k and 922 DVR receivers. The EHD that you connect can be anywhere between 50gb to 2TB. It must have its own power supply, support USB 2.0, must not use flash memory and should only be a single-hard disk drive. We no longer charge a fee to hook up an external hard drive unless you are hooking one up to our VIP 211, 211k and 411 receivers to make them DVRs. Once you hook up your external hard drive please follow this link in order to finish transferring your DVR programs. http://www.mydish.com/support/use-ehd I hope you find this information useful and if you have any further question please feel free to email me at Cheri.Torres@Dish.com. Thank you.

There is no fee to transfer recordings to an external hard drive all you have to do is get a hard drive USB 2.0 you can buy it from best buy or radio shack and plug it in onto the USB port on the receiver and follow the instructions on the screen.

I know the system better than the system!
The DISH rep above is spot on, though she left out that the external hard drive is also compatible with the new Hopper system.
