There are a couple of ways to do it..
1- Use audio cable.. Red and White Rca cables and connect them from surround sound reciever to the Cable Box then turn the Surround sound reciever to the corresponding input that you have plugged into and it should have sound.
2- Use optical audio cable instead of RCA cables.2 comments

You can use RCA cables or optical cable from dish receiver to surround sound.2 comments
Relax, I'm here to help!
the easiest way to hook up the surround sound is to run an optical cable from your tv to the input of your surround sound receiver. now whatever input you use on the surround rec, set the receiver to that so you have audio from whatever you are watching on the tv on the surround sound without having to switch it every time you want to use a different component, i.e. dvd, dish, playstation, etc. if you don't have optical input or output or either, you can use rca from the tv to the surround sound rec.

if you have a non-hd rcvr, use the red/white from rcvr output to surround sound input
if its a hd rcvr, use a digital optical cable

if your tv has an audio out, the easiest way is to use RCA from tv to surround sound. that will funnel all sound from the tv
