You can transfer content from dish rcvr to an external hard drive but you won't be able to play them on your of due to the content would be encrypted and only play on dish network receivers.

you have to call dish to pay the one time fee of $5.00 1st. then you have to use an external hard drive not a laptop . When you hook the hard drive up to the DVR with a usb cord it will ask to format your hard drive each to you hook them up. making it impossiable to download only a few movies at a time. if your going to do this make sure your Dish DVR is full 1st.

Super Dish Installer is correct... In addition, If you have a HD DVR receiver now there is NO activation fee for an external hard drive. If you have a VIP211 receiver there would be a 1 time activation fee of $40. I wish the tech's and FSM's would stick to installing and quit giving false information to customers.

if you have a 510/512/625 receiver, you cant enable the USB port to attach an external hard drive to it.

You must have a 622/722/922 receiver to attach an external hard drive to the front or back USB port. no activation usb port fee. The external hard drive must be a 2.0/3.0 (750 GB or less or 2 TB or more ) external hard drive w/ a power adapter.
you can transfer movies onto the external hard drive but you can t take the hard drive and connect it to your pc for playback.
