try this 1.Tap the phone icon from the iPhone’s home screen. 2.Tap the voicemail icon at the far right. 3.Tap the “Greeting” icon at the top left. 4.The next screen will show you whether you are using the default greeting or a custom one. 5.To record a new custom greeting, just click the record button at the bottom left. Speak your greeting into the iPhone and then click “done.” 6.To listen to the greeting, click “play” at the bottom left. 7.To use that greeting, click the “save” button in the top right. If you’re not happy with it and want to try a new one, just click “record” and talk again. 8.To cancel and use your existing greeting, tap “cancel” in the top left. here is the link http://ipod.about.com/od/phonefeatures/ht/voice...

you might have gotten a data feature that the representative forgot to add with the vvm options. if you are seeing that when you press and hold the 1 key it says "dialing voicemail"
continue through that set up and ensure there are no messages. You can check through your online account to see if vvm is part of the data plan or can call and have them troubleshoot for you. They will also need to ensure the correct vvm message center number is programmed into the system as well. (btw: vvm means visual voicemail.
