Lufthansa is a German carrier. German kids can drink at 15 legally, I can't imagine that they would not allow an international flight by a 16 year old!

You are all making deductions based on irrelevant criteria.
Every airline has its own rules regarding minors travelling. Make sure you check each airline before you make your plans.
If you call United Reservation, they will look all that up for you. -
Even though 16 is a minor, if she is a seasoned traveler, I wouldn't worry about it. As long as all her documentation is in order, she doesn't need unaccompaned minor escort service to transfer. At 16, I went to Europe and traveled alone from North Africa to the Arctic Circle. And that was before cell phones and ATM's. If she has street smarts, she will be fine!
Reservations, web, customer service, I am your wonder woman! I understand that some united policies are not fair. Give me the opportunity to explain or further assist until you are satisfied. I provide honest and real answers. If you ask me a question, I research, and answer to the best of my ability and what will help YOU understand how to work with United and its policies and processes.
