Are checked bags free when the ticket is bought using united miles?

Sadly, if you are solely using miles, the bags are not free or included in the ticket. However, if you have the Mileage Explorer credit card, and pay the taxes for your ticket on that card, then you would at least be entitled to the 1 free bag. If you have status, then of course, your bag would be free as well.

Standard Awards booked in Y/YN would be free! Revenue bkg Class Y Fares also get two bags free under 50lbs/under 62 linear inches of course. Big surprize not to many are aware of this

Certain customers are exempt from paying checked bag fees for up to three pieces of baggage (bags must meet weight and size restrictions).
Customers with a confirmed seat assignment in United BusinessFirst®, United First®, United Global First or United Business® will be allowed to check up to three bags, with a maximum weight of 70 pounds.
Star Alliance® Gold members, including MileagePlus® Premier® Gold, Premier Platinum and Premier 1K® members are allowed to check up to three bags, each with a maximum weight of 70 pounds and a maximum outside dimension of 62 linear inches. MileagePlus Premier Silver and Star Alliance Silver members are allowed one checked bag with a maximum weight of 50 pounds and a maximum outside dimension of 62 linear inches.
