I work for a T-Mobile retail location, and have a deep knowledge of how the company works. I may not always...
Yes, you should have no issue accessing the Internet with the HTC G1.

In most cases its as simple as inserting your SIM card and it should be good to go. You might in same cases need to update the access info for the phone in some cases. You can do this from the phone in settings, wireless networks, mobile network and then menu add "APN". The APN info you need is as follows:
APN: epc.tmobile.com
Proxy: not set
Port: not set
Username: none
Password: ****
Server: *
MMSC: http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
MMS Proxy: 216.155.165.50
MMS port: 8080
MCC: 310
MNC:260
Authentication Type: Not set
APN Type: not set -
The G1 is a T-mobile device, it never made it to any other carrier. That said you will have no issues with internet. BUT, you will be limited to 3G, as the device is not a 4G device.
