I bought 2 tickets at a discounted price.

I bought 2 tickets at a discounted price. One is under my name, and the other is under a friend's name. Both tickets were purchased using my credit card. Now, we decided we need to cancel our flight. Southwest is telling me that half the money will be credited to me and the other half will be credited to her, since the ticket was under her name. Is there any way I can get all the credit under solely my name since I am the one that paid for the entire thing? We don't want the both of us to be stuck with $79 credit. We would rather I (since I originally purchased it) be stuck with the total credit.

Tickets, flights, customer care, vacation, packages, refund

This expert is helping you out because there weren't many active Southwest Airlines experts.

This is ridiculousness. I haven't heard anything like this before.

I think they are not paying you credit on your credit card, it may be they are giving you airlines credit, that you can use with in an year otherwise it will be lost.

Other information: (look at 3rd point).

    Additional Refund Information:
    • Unused, fully refundable tickets that do not carry restrictions may be applied toward future travel or refunded within one year from the date of issue.
    • All eligible refunds are provided according to your original form of payment.
    • Refunds for tickets purchased with credit cards will be credited to the same credit card.
    • Our Refunds Department will process an eligible refund to the original credit/debit card within seven business days from the date we receive your request.
    • Your card-issuing bank may then take up to ten business days to post the credit to your account. Based on your individual billing cycle, you will see the refund on your statement within one to two statement mailings.

They are basing it off the fact that they have different terms that apply for discounted tickets. I wish I could have gotten all the money back onto my credit card. I ended up paying a fee of $75 ($179-$75) in order to be able to get the amount under solely my name.

check your ticket (terms and condition) and if that is written on it, then you can't claim it.
Otherwise, go to southwest airlines office and ask for terms and condition where it is written about discounted price.

      It's all at their end.

If they cannot make an exception for you, then the travel credits are transferable and may be used toward the purchase of future air fare. So your friend could share hers with you for later use, or vice versa.

They tell me that since I bought the tickets at a discounted price, the tickets are not transferable. I have contacted SWA and their separate customer service hotline. They keep telling me the same thing, but I do not believe that there is nothing they cam do or that the request I'm making is completely out of line.

I'm sorry to hear that. I overlooked your intial comment about buying the discounted tickets. Getting that lower price is a good bargain, but the trade-off is that lower priced fares just do not offer the same flexibility of usage that the full fares offer. It's one of those situations where you get what you pay for--full fare purchases give the customer more options. Bargain fares are a good deal but the caveat is that you must use them "as is." SWA is one of the few airlines that provides something--travel credit--toward a future purchase. Many airlines do not offer that.

The travel credit--which is like a gift card or certificate--used to be transferable. Tickets are not transferable but I thought the travel credit was able to be used by others besides the person to whom it was issued. The only other solution I can think of is for your friend to reimburse you for her share of the credit that she will receive. Then, she can still use her credit toward a future fare purchase, and you may use yours.

An idea for your future trips--travel insurance policies are a great purchase to make. The cost is quite minimal, and if you have to cancel your trip for ANY reason, you can recoup the money you lost due to the cancellation.

I can assure you that the information you were provided by Customer Relations is accurate. They would have no reason to tell you there is nothing they can do if a solution is available, I promise! It's not that your request is out of line, either. It's just that the type of fare you purchased does not qualify for many options. We try very hard to take care of our customers at Southwest when their travel plans change, but regretfully, there are limits to the policies we have in place and the exceptions that can be made..

Reservations agent for Southwest Airlines, leaping over policies with a single bound. faster than a speeding...

    Michelle,

unfortunately you are not able to transfer your friends ticket to yourself, even if you paid for them. Even with a full fare ticket they are non transferable. I will explain further. The discounted tickets are non refundable and non transferable (wanna get way fare or ding or web only.) The fully refundable tickets are the anytime fare and the business select, they even those are non transferable. Southwest airlines use to be able to transfer funds to someone else until March of 2011. Before that date Southwest was the only airline that would do that without any sort of charge. But the larger airlines complained and we were forced to change our policy by the FAA

You can call our customer relations department and request a refund on your friends ticket. But those are done on a case by case basis. For the type of fare that you purchased the only way they would generally refund the ticket is if the person that you purchased the ticket is "extremely ill" and was told that he/she will not be able to fly for a very long time. Or if the passanger passed away. if any of those are the case, and is told that to our customer relations department. They DO NOT ask for verification. They take you at your word and a refund will be given back to the original credit card of purchase. But your ticket with still have the travel funds to be used with in 1 year from the original date of purchase.

The number to our customer relations department is 214-932-0333. The are open Monday thru Friday from 7am til 8pm central standard time.

The agents that you spoke to were correct in saying that there is nothing that they can do. We as agents not even as supervisors can make or process your request. Only our customer relations department is able to assist you with your request.
