What receiver do you have for your directv? look on the front panel where your access card is and read the model number. Most Directv receivers dont have inputs, but some older ones do. Why are you wanting to hook your DVD player to your Directv anyways?

sounds like you've got the video plug in the wrong spot. The video is the yellow one. Try twisting it and/or moving it to a different video port.
