I had numerous unauthorized withdrawals and purchases made with my debit card.

I had numerous unauthorized withdrawals and purchases made with my debit card. I neatly typed all of them up and mailed them to your claims dept. My claim was ignored because all the information needs to be phoned in, I was told. Is this true? It wiil take me 6 to 8 hours to phone in all this information. You can't respond to a written claim?

Nix on investments but everything else is fair game!

Actually, Steve, debit card disputes are opened over the phone because there is specific information that is needed to begin the process and a claim request mailed in is unlikely to include everything needed. Also, most financial institutions limit the time frame a dispute can be filed for -- it's 90 days in almost all cases. If your unauthorized transactions are outside of this time frame, you may not be able to include those in a dispute and there would, of course, be questions on why you waited over three months to contact the bank.
Call the customer service department at 800.432.1000, ask to be connected to the Electronic Claims Services department and talk to the associate there about the transactions. It is the required procedure and you'll get the best information that way.

I am hard of hearing and communicating over the phone is not a viable communication tool for me. That's why I sent you a detailed report on the unauthorized withdrawals from my account, which included all the information on my statements. You set a time frame for reporting unauthorized withdrawals, but a unauthorized withdrawal is an unauthorized withdrawals regardless of time. I was in the hospital for about 6 months and could not effectively monitor my checking account, so your 90 day time frame just doesn't apply in my case. I will close my account shortly. I finally found a reason to hate Bank of America, it's the claims department. I have had my account with you for many years, but that will end soon. I can no longer do business with you, I think you understand. Stephen A. Sherman

I am a former employee of Bank of America and we all have our reasons for leaving, Stephen. The 90-day rule does apply for all cases but it is always possible to have a special circumstances waiver. I do wish you had mentioned your disability in your original communique; it would have made things so very much simpler. You can get assistance at any Bank of America banking center to work with the claims' department.]
The bank also has TTY lines that are for their customers with hearing challenges so they do attempt to make things as easy as possible. Still, regulations are things that everyone has to deal with.
I apologize if the advice I offered you was not specific for your particular circumstances.
