I have an AT&T 1722 Answering machine and am expecting important calls on my land-line phone while away next week. I have tried preset code 0123 and default code 500 to no avail. Any thoughts?

    Freedom for Everyone!

From page 3 of PDF found here: http://phone.manualsonline.com/manuals/mfg/att/...

You can use the setup button to enter setup mode by holding it, then press till it announces the remote access code. From there you can change it if needed.

It states in your guide the machine is preset to 500, you need to follow feature setup step 2 & 3 for each digit for creating access code. If it does work I can only assume the machine is defective.
