I have been a Manager with a third party ATT group for 5+ years. I have seen several situations, and have...

If it's under contract, chances are it is NOT unlocked. Your best bet would be to call Apple at 1 800 My Apple to verify this information.

He may have jailbroken the device and unlocked it that way. However this is just an option and you did mention factory unlocked. Also some third party sites offer unlocks for a fee.

You can also go into an apple store if you dont want to call the Apple number. I'm with Factual Fran they would know for sure if it is or Isn't . Thank you!

Thanks, I actually called my apple and they were able to help me out. The issue kind of got confusing since the phone was bought in an European country and the apple representative said that it shows the phone is unlocked but she was also a bit confused with what was said Contract status: under contract and contract expriariton date: feb 21, 2014. she said maybe it is only unlocked within European countries. She said I needed to call the carrier of the country it was purchased and ask them. Too much trouble!! But the guy who wanted to sell it also had mentioned that it was bought in Europe and that I can bring a few different sim cards and try them on and he said that he has tried two different carriers himself . he seemed to be a very nice, honest guy but I just didn't want it to be too confusing.

Sales Rep for AT&T for the last 5 years and a half.

I'm with FactualFran on this one. If it is under a contract it was probably bought subsidized and it won't be able to be factory unlocked until the contract is over (also make sure it is the right carrier since I have seen verizon iphones not work on At&t even if they are factory unlocked). Call apple at 1-800-MYIPHONE(694-7466) and then talk to a representative. Check with AT&T as well at 1-800-331-0500 to make sure that the phone wasn't declared lost/stolen as it will not work with AT&T and it can't be factory unlocked.
