I recently switched to Sprint keeping my old cell number. Does that automatically cancel my contract with AT&T or do I need to inform somebody?

Customer's Rule....I'll prove it!
Once your service became active on sprints the 'port-out' was complete, and there is no need to contact at&T unless you need final billing information.

well when porting out changing to another company the new company will handle the whole process if you can provide them with the information need it also your account needs to be active and not past due once if everything goes out properly you just will need to pay your final bill and thats it. also making sure you are not under contract or you will have to pay an etf charge.

sprint will take care of the porting process you do not need to do anything. They contact att and take your number over.
