Some time ago I booked a flight with American Airlines but when I got to the airport I saw that the flight was being conducted by another airline. It was a small plane and I'm assuming American Airlines contracts out those flights. That's understandable, but I feel American should have let me know this was happening. When I buy a ticket with an airline I expect that's what I'm paying for. Is this commonplace?

I work for American Airlines as a reservations Agent Since 2000. Our children are grown & gone. I work in...

Yes, this is very commonplace. American Eagle is now actually a "Stand-alone" Company, but very tightly linked with American Airlines. They had for many years, been American Airlines Regional Jet Service. American also has Contractual Agreements with 2 other Regional Carriers. You have to read carefully because it should say the actual Airlines name and say "Operated By" American Airlines or American Eagle. All Big Airlines have Contractual Agreements with smaller Regional Airlines and include the Acronym "DBA", which stands for "Doing Business As", to let you know this.
